You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport for the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. This is one of the most spectacular flights in the world. Twin Otter aircraft fly this route above contrasting country, with the snow line of the Himalayan range to the north and the rugged foothills of Nepal immediately below and stretching away to the south. The landing at Lukla airstrip (2800m) adds considerably to the general excitement and expectation. On arrival you can have a cup of tea while the crew sort out the baggage. As you leave Lukla, you take a sharp left turn and head south, descending through rhododendron forests, stunning when in their bloom in Spring. Dramatic views of the Dudh Khosi slicing through the steep forested valley greet you on your right. It takes about one hour to weave your way down the trail to Surke (2339m). There is a good, flat piece of ground with the Surke Khola running through it, which provides a fine spot for a light lunch. You have good views of Mount Kumbila (5761m) looking back up the valley beyond Namche. It is a steady climb of around 2-3 hrs to reach Chotak La (2945m) and then you contour for about an hour to reach Puiyan (2835m) – your base for the night. Puiyan is an attractive village with a scattering of lodges. Overnight camp.
DAY 04: TREK TO PANGKONGMA (3178M/10424FT) 7-8 HRS (A, B, L, D)
Today you begin climbing gradually until you can enjoy the view of Cho Oyo (8201m). After about an hour or so of walking and after crossing the Poya Khola, you turn off the main Jiri-Namche trail and onto the old trade route, climbing up to the ridgeline overlooking the Khare Khola. There you have good views of the old Everest expedition walk-in route from Jiri, and the dramatic Dudh Kosi (“milk river”). You cross the Khari La (3081m) before descending through a spectacular rhododendron forest to Kharte (2683m). You now leave the main trail and begin contouring to the east. Lunch is enjoyed by a subsidiary stream of the Khari Khola. After lunch, you contour round the hillside through sessile oak forest for about an hour before a steady climb for three quarters of an hour up to the attractive farming and trading village of Pangkongma.
DAY 05: TREK TO TOWARDS KOTE. 3-4 HRS (A, B, L, D)
It is a short climb of approx ½ hour through rhododendron forest to the top of the Pangkongma La (3178m). From the pass you’ll enjoy your first views of the impressive, snow-capped Mera Peak. You now descend for half an hour to Sibuje, before diverting from the main trail at 2900m. You continue through mixed forest, contouring along the side of the valley for about one hour to a campsite in a clearing (approx 2900m).
DAY 06: TREK TO TOWARDS KOTE. 8 HRS (A, B, L, D)
You begin a long, steady climb through juniper, rhododendron and bamboo forest until you reach the high point at approximately 3300m. You have good intermittent views of Mera Peak at various clearings on your ascent. The virgin forest is stunning in Spring when the rhododendrons are in full bloom, and avid ornithologists will delight at the variety of strikingly colorful, exotic birds. The descent is steep, rocky and hard-going, and full concentration is required! The final section of the boulder-strewn descent path leads to the river and your lunch spot – it’s approximately 3hrs walking before lunch. Once you’ve re-charged your batteries, you cross the river and climb slightly, before contouring around the hillside for an hour. You then begin another steep climb for an hour or so before descending to the river, crossing over a log bridge and a 5 minute climb to your campsite – deep in bamboo and rhododendron forest. Camp altitude approx 3300m.
DAY 07: TREK TO KOTE (3700M/12136FT) 6 HRS (A, B, L, D)
Today you ascend steadily and contour along the hillside with views of Mera, before undulating terrain through pine, juniper and rhododendron forest brings you to Takthok after approximately 2½ hours walking. This is the point which joins the main trail to Mera where there’s a tea house selling tea, chocolate bars and beers. After that it is about a half hour descent to your lunch spot next to a stream. An undulating path brings you to the Hinku Khola. You continue to trek along this for an hour or so, keeping it on your right, until you reach the village of Kharte. This contains a handful of newly built lodges. Overnight camp.
DAY 08: TREK TO TANGNAG (4350M/14268FT) 5 HRS (A, B, L, D)
You begin trekking gradually uphill besides the Hinku Kola on a boulder-strewn path. The scenery changes today, from woodland to scrub and moraine as you climb in excess of 4000m. You will undoubtedly feel the altitude today as you ascend. You have superb views of Kyashar (6800m) and Kusum Karguru (6100m) at the head of the valley. After approximately 5 hours walking you reach the settlement of Tangnag and its a collection of huts and lodges. Overnight camp.
DAY 09: ACCLIMATIZATION DAY TANGNAG (4350M/14268FT) 5 HRS (A, B, L, D)
A return trek to Dig Kharka (4660m) provides good acclimatization. You leave Tangnag and begin trekking along a boulder-strewn path. After about an hour’s gradual climbing, you begin a gently rising traverse, until you reach a flat piece of ground known as Dig Kharka. The walk takes about two and a half hours to ascend and one and a half hours to descend. You have a good view of your route up towards the base camp and partial views of Mera from Dig Kharka. The scenery today is spectacular as you are encircled amongst snow-capped giants. Overnight camp.
DAY 10: TREK FROM TANGNAG TO KHARE (5000M/16400FT) 5-6 HRS (A, B, L, D)
You trek towards the head of the valley, before a steep half hour’s climb. The panoramic mountain scenery is magnificent as you continue to ascend more gradually all the way to Khare (5000m) at the head of the valley. There are a collection of huts and lodges here and good flat camping ground. You’ll have spectacular views, and can see your route climbing towards the ridge en route to the Mera La. Overnight camp.
DAY 11: KHARE – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY (A, B, L, D)
We recommend that you either trek up the ridge behind the campsite for an hour or so or walk up towards the Mera glacier. Your trek leader will advise on the possibilities. Camp at Khare.
DAY 12: TREK TO MERA BASE CAMP (5300M/17384FT) 2-3 HRS (A, B, L, D)

If you don’t feel like going all the way to the top, there is an interim view point at around 16,732ft/5100m, which is adorned with prayers flags. You have good views of the Nuptse ridge and Island Peak on your way. Overnight lodge.
DAY 19: TREK TO TENGBOCHE (3753m) 6-7 hours. (A,B,L,D)

DAY 20: TREK TO CHUOMA (2,743m). 5-6 hours. (A,B,L,D)
From Tengboche the trail drops sharply down to the Dudh Koshi River and the village of Phunki, where we cross the river, and up toward Namche Bazaar, winding high above the river with views north towards Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse. You then descend into Namche before making the knee crunching descent back down to the valley. The warmer climate should offer a good opportunity to finally shed a layer or two. You will still have wonderful views, and the chance to relax in slightly warmer valley surroundings. Trek back down the Dudh Kosi valley for a short way past the checkpoint at Jorsale to CHUMA. Overnight lodge.
DAY 21: TREK TO LUKLA (2,880m). 6 to 7 hrs. (A,B,L,D)
Most people head towards Lukla with a heavy heart. There is something very special about the setting, the villages and the people of the high Khumbu hills and valleys and these memories will help you up the deceptively long, final climb into Lukla. The trail to Lukla follows the upward route as far as Chablung, and then turns off above the village of Chaunrikharka towards Lukla. There are signs beyond the stream at Chablung pointing you in the direction of Lukla. The broad trail, leading uphill to the left, climbs steadily past a few bhattis and the school, then through scrub forests above the school and houses of Chaunrikharka. After a steep final climb there is a collection of houses and bhattis in Tamang Tole, a new settlement a short distance from the airport. As you approach the airstrip the houses and hotels rapidly proliferate. On arrival you can finally relax and enjoy a celebratory beer. Overnight Lodge.
DAY 22: FLY TO KATHMANDU. (A,B)
Lukla is situated high above the river on a shelf at 2,800m and as the runway is on a slope there is a difference of almost 60 metres between its lower and upper ends which makes for an interesting take off. Another chance to enjoy this great flight. Please note that flights into Lukla are sometimes delayed due to weather conditions either in fog-bound Kathmandu or windy Lukla; be reassured that our staff in Lukla and in Kathmandu will be doing everything possible to minimise the inconvenience caused if this happens. Your patience in the trying circumstances, which can occur, will be greatly appreciated. On arrival in Kathmandu you will be met and transferred to the hotel.
DAY 23: AT LEISURE IN KATHMANDU. (A,B)
An opportunity to relax and reflect on your adventures and to complete any sightseeing and last-minute shopping. Overnight in hotel.
