Dwarika's 79 spacious guest rooms and suites are all individually designed. There are 16th century windows in many, while there are private courtyards attached to others. Buddhist symbols on hand printed curtains and bed spreads are used with traditional fabrics and accessories and exotic carpets. The four poster king-sized beds in some while others have twin beds befitting royalty. The rooms have unique perspectives and exudes tranquility and elegance.

Heritage: The Newari civilization of the Kathmandu Valley has a rich history of arts and traditions. This includes a legacy of intricate wood carvings, distinctive temples, sculptures, bronze and terracotta works as well as the unique lifestyle of the people themselves. The Dwarika's Kathmandu is a heritage hotel composed of an unparalleled collection of art works from this civilization and continues its tradition of warmth and hospitality.

How it all began...The Dwarika's commitment to heritage conservation dates back to 1952, when the founder of the hotel, the late Dwarika Das Shrestha came upon some carpenters sawing off the carved portion of an intricately carved wooden pillar. These pieces of exquisitely carved wood, several centuries old, were being carted away as firewood. Struck by a sense of anguish as he witnessed the destruction of an ancient culture which was a part of his heritage, Dwarika Das Shrestha bought the old pillar and gave the carpenters new lumber.

The destruction of Nepal's heritage has continued unabated as Nepal moves towards modernisation. For Dwarika Das Shrestha, what began as an impulsive action, grew into a passion and ultimately a lifetime of work. His commitment towards meticulously collecting and documenting artefacts soon took on a life of its own. Faced with the problem of storing these bulky works of art, Dwarika decided to construct a building in the old Newari style of Kathmandu, using rescued doors and window frames. He envisioned that this new building, which would operate as a guest house, would give these restored treasures a new life and allow more people to appreciate Nepal's ancient cultural history. The vision behind the Dwarika's Hotel was thus born.

Conservation: The Dwarika's Kathmandu is a pioneer in sustainable heritage conservation. It has become a living example of how cultural restoration and tourism can be complementary, leading to the preservation of historical artefacts and the growth of a rich cultural industry. Through the ongoing restoration and preservation of Kathmandu's architecture and cultural heritage, true beauty comes alive at the Dwarika's Kathmandu, and the legacy of a unique individual lives on.

SERVICES AND FACILITIES:

Restaurants: The Dwarika's selection of three restaurants and a bar provide a range of culinary experiences from the world over. The spacious courtyards, amidst the architectural grandeur of Kathmandu's ancient civilization, are a unique feature of the hotel and provide an ideal location for all day lounging and informal dining. For those looking for a more elegant dining experience, the Dwarika's has two specialty restaurants - Krishnarpan for a Nepali fine dining experience and Mako for the best Japanese food in Nepal.

Krishnarpan: Krishnarpan serves the finest Nepali cuisines and is a slow dining experience reminiscent of the meals relished by the Maharajas of Nepal. Meals range from 6 to 22 courses and is an unparalleled fine dining experience native to Nepal. Prepared from fresh organic vegetables straight from the Dwarika's own organic farm, a meal at Krishnarpan is a journey through the multi-ethnic nature of Nepal's culinary culture.

Mako: For a more subtle taste of the finer things nature serves, Mako provides the best Japanese food this side of the Himalayas. Fresh, organic and healthy, a meal at Mako is one to savor.

With a separate organic menu that provides a fusion of Nepali flavors with popular world cuisines, the restaurant is a source of nutritious, healthy and gratifying food. Fusion bar overlooks a swimming pool that is replica of 12th century Nepali royal baths. Open throughout the day and late into the night, the bar offers an elegant environment in which to sip exotic fruit cocktails or aperitifs or for enjoying an after-dinner cigar or nightcap.
