Eco-friendly Treks & Expedition serve you room booking service for Hotel Summit, Kathmandu, Nepal. The Summit is a very special Nepali style hotel with western comfort. Terraces set in spacious flower gardens give views north across the Kathmandu valley to the snow clad Himalayan range beyond.
Open balconies with handmade tile floors and carved wooden pillars connect to the rooms. A wide range of accommodation is offered, from the self contained apartments in 'Summit Towers' and the luxurious 'Himalaya View Wing Rooms', to the original 'Garden Wing Rooms' and the good value budget accommodation available in 'Holland House'.
The Summit has a famous bar and restaurant, beautiful gardens and terraces, an outdoor pool, beauty salon, business centre, conference and meeting facilities, room service, wireless internet and telephones from all rooms.
It was founded in 1978 by a group of Dutchmen who had - and still have - a great affinity for the country, its mountains, people, history and culture. Together with a small group of Nepalese - some are still working at the Summit Hotel - they built 36 Garden Wing rooms and in 1990 the Himalayan View Wings. Currently the hotel offers 73 rooms and employs some 150 Nepalese employees. A Nepalese and an English managing director are currently in charge of the daily management. They are supported by a Dutch Board of Directors and 8 shareholder families.
Caring for the environment is considered an intrinsic value of the Hotel, as it was founded by trekkers and mountaineers who came to Nepal for the culture, the purity of nature and the beautiful Himalayas. The hotel gardens include unique and special plants and trees which provide a home for birds and small animals.
Garbage is collected by the 'Women's Environmental Group'. In addition the hotel is committed to reduce the amount of water use for washing and showering. Rain water and low energy light bulbs are used in the hotel. As the demand for fuel and water increases the hotel uses other resources, like solar energy, recycled kitchen oil and 'grey water'.
On of the objectives of developing the Summit Hotel was to reciproque the hospitality by offering the Nepalese an interesting job by deploying their talents and earning a living. This was reflected in fair working conditions and on the job training, which was not a common practice in Nepal at the time.
The Hotel has economically grown on a profitable basis. Virtually all the profits made over the year have been reinvested in improvements and extensions of the Hotel. Although workers unions have existed in Nepal already for some time, only recently are social conditions in Nepal gradually improving. The Summit Hotel which already implemented these social programs, welcomes these developments.
Next to these basic hotel conditions, the Foundation was established to provide schooling funds to the children of the Summit Hotel employees. In 2008, 140 children received half of their school fees from the foundation. Each year a price is awarded to the best students of the class.
