Homestay is a form of tourism program that allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to better learn the local lifestyle as well as improve their language ability. While homestays can occur in Nepal, some destinations do more to encourage homestay than others as a means of developing the community based tourism industry. Hosting a homestay participant also allows the local family to earn some additional, needed income. Having low profitability, as it is, homestay cannot be regarded as strictly commercial activity, but more of cross cultural exchange.
Homestay is a cultural exchange between a local individual or family/homestay host and tourists. During a Homestay, the host provides the tourists with all their basic needs, including their own room and food as agreed previously. In return, the tourist pays daily fee, called a homestay fee. Over the period of their time together the host assists the tourists to become familiar with the local area and customs in a relaxed and friendly household setting. The tourist is also encouraged to share with the host information about their home country and culture. This interaction is what makes homestay ideal for someone looking for a unique cultural experience. Homestay is newly introduced in tourism sector of Nepal.
